Developing Early Number Concepts and Number Sense
Promoting
Good Beginnings
1.
Enhance children’s
natural interest in mathematics and their instinct to use it to make sense of
their world.
2.
Build on children’s
experiences and knowledge, taking advantage of familiar contexts.
3.
Base mathematics curriculum
and teaching practices on a solid understanding of both mathematics and child development.
4.
Use formal and
informal experiences in the curriculum and teaching practices to strengthen children’s
problem-solving and reasoning processes.
5.
Provide
opportunities for children to explain their thinking as they interact with
mathematics in deep and sustained ways.
6.
Support children’s
learning by thoughtfully and continually assessing children’s mathematical
knowledge, skills, and strategies.

The
Relations Core: More Than, Less Than, & Equal To
The
concepts of “more,” “less,” and “same’ are basic relationships contributing to
the overall concept of number. For all three concepts, children should
construct sets using counters as well as make comparisons or choices between
two given sets.
Early
Number Sense
A “good
intuition about numbers and their relationships. It develops gradually as a
result of exploring numbers, visualizing them in a variety of contexts, and
relating them in ways that are not limited by traditional algorithms.”
